Our dental hygienists will advise you on oral hygiene techniques and products and help you maintain any restorative treatment you may have had including dental implants, crowns and bridges. The hygienist uses a range of instruments including the latest ultrasonic equipment to remove plaque and hard deposits that cause inflammation and bleeding gums. The hygienist is also able to offer advice on suitable toothbrushes, paste and interdental floss or brushes to make sure your teeth are kept as clean as possible between visits.
Many patients lose their teeth not from decay, but gum disease, and to avoid future problems we recommend that patients visit the hygienist at least twice a year. This could be more often if gum disease is detected.
Gum disease is a very common condition where the gums become swollen, sore or infected. If you have gum disease, your gums may bleed when you brush your teeth and you may have bad breath. This early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis.
If gingivitis is not treated, it can develop in to periodontitis which affects the bone and tissues that support the teeth and can lead to the loss of teeth over time. Gum disease can also lead to having bad breath which is very unpleasant. These issues can easily be avoided or treated by regularly visiting the hygienist.
